“There is something about a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” -Winston Churchill
The benefits of riding for those with disabilities have been recognized for over 3,000 years. Today, therapeutic and assisted riding and other safe, purposeful and supervised interactions with horses are recognized to benefit children and adults with almost any cognitive, physical and/or emotional disability.
Simply experiencing the motion or movement of a horse can be very therapeutic. Because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. In addition to the therapeutic benefits, horseback riding also provides recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors. Therapeutic/assisted (or adaptive) horsemanship contributes to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with disabilities.
Second Star's STARS program also benefits those who may not have a disability, but wish to have special assistance when riding (e.g., a leader).
